Hīkoi Series – Whakaputanga
This artwork is the first release from my ongoing series, Hīkoi.
Hīkoi is a collection that reflects my perspective on the Hīkoi (10–19 November 2024). This period was not only a pivotal moment in Aotearoa’s history and for Māori as a whole, but it was also deeply significant for me personally and artistically.
The decision to feature this print, Whakaputanga, as one of the first pieces in the series is intentional. It connects to Te Whakaputanga o te Rangatiratanga o Niu Tireni—the Declaration of Independence. While standing on the grounds of Parliament among our people, I saw more than just Tino Rangatiratanga and Whakaputanga flags waving. I witnessed a powerful expression of unity. Our people stood together, voicing opposition to the Treaty Bill and asserting our identity as Māori.
Initially, I joined the Hīkoi simply because everyone else was going. But in the end, I was grateful to be there—to witness our people reclaiming their power, standing firm, and making their voices heard.
Be you, do more, want more.
Whakaputanga (noun) – expression, manifestation.
